September brings a subtle shift to the farmers market. Summer’s warmth still lingers, but the days are getting shorter, the evenings cooler, and the harvest is beginning its transition toward apples, pumpkins, and the flavors of fall.
But before we completely turn our attention to autumn, there’s one colorful piece of summer we’re not quite ready to let go: flowers.
Root & Blossom Flower Farm brings buckets overflowing with fresh-cut blooms and greens, creating one of the most colorful displays at the market.
Owned by Alex Sindoni and her mother, Debbie Barrier, Root & Blossom Flower Farm specializes in seasonal cut flowers, with bouquets featuring favorites like dahlias, zinnias, celosia, sunflowers, hydrangeas and more. They also offer seasonal flower subscriptions, DIY flower buckets, small weddings and showers, and one of their favorite offerings: private U-pick experiences on the farm.
For Alex, growing flowers began as something much more personal.
She initially started gardening as a way to relieve stress. Working with the soil and watching something grow from a tiny seed gave her a sense of calm and balance. With a small plot, a few seeds, and a desire to create something joyful, she discovered a passion that quickly took root.
That passion was also deeply connected to family.
Alex grew up on the same street as her grandfather, a farmer who instilled in her an appreciation for the land and the understanding that a little dirt, patience, and hard work can produce something beautiful.
When her grandfather passed away in 2021, Alex moved her flower-growing operation onto the same farmland he had farmed and loved.
The name Root & Blossom Flower Farm is an ode to that legacy: honoring her family’s roots while celebrating the opportunity for something new to blossom.
Today, Alex envisions the farm as a creative and welcoming space where people can slow down, reconnect with nature, and find a little happiness. Whether you’re picking up a bouquet at the farmers market, receiving flowers through a subscription, creating your own arrangement from a DIY bucket, or spending time among the flowers during a U-pick, she hopes to share a little piece of that joy with others.
We caught up with Alex to see how the flower season has been growing.
We always look forward to seeing your table filled with colorful flowers and greens at our Summer Market. How has your year been since last summer?
This year has been good! It’s come with its challenges — like cold temperatures later into the spring and little to no rain — but it’s taught us how to adapt and be more prepared for next year. Every season is a big learning lesson.
How has the response been at our Market this year?
The response at the market this year has been incredible. We have the very best customers who come through the Salem NH Farmers Market, and they are major supporters of our business.
I love seeing everyone’s smiling faces, and seeing people walk through the market with our bouquets is a dream come true!
Have there been any challenges or areas where you’ve seen growth this year?
Planning for a steady flow of flowers when the spring weather is unpredictable has been a challenge. However, we’re investing in peony plants this fall, which will hopefully help us fill some of those gaps in the future.
Right now, our focus is primarily on building a retail business with a solid foundation and a steady supply of flowers. Then we’ll move on to other areas!
Any new products or flowers planned?
We have a really solid mix of flowers that we stick to — dahlias, zinnias, celosia, sunflowers, etc. — but we’re taking the leap to invest in more perennials, like peonies, for next season!
Tell us about your U-picks.
We love having people on the farm for U-picks!
Right now, U-picks are arranged by reaching out with a preferred date and time, and we’ll make something work. All of our U-picks are private and scheduled by date and time block.
Do you provide other services for weddings, showers, or other events?
We offer DIY buckets, small weddings, and showers. I’ve also set up some really amazing flower bars for events, and they are one of my favorite things to do.
Do you offer classes in flower arranging or flower drying?
We don’t offer any classes at the moment, but we’re always happy to provide advice based on our experiences. I love helping people get into the garden and create something of their own!
